Max Schoen, Licensed Social Worker

I have found, through painful experience, that the most important step a person can take is always the next one.
— Dalinar Kholin (Oathbringer by Brandon Sanderson)

I began my career as a strength and conditioning coach in collegiate athletics, working with students of all different backgrounds, experiences, and ability. Through 8 years in the profession, my definitions of success and ways I approached coaching shifted, and I came to understand the impact my role can have on others. My philosophy centered on addressing the needs of each individual, meeting them where they were in their stage of development, expressing genuine care, and creating a safe and welcoming environment in a space where many felt intimidated. This has shaped the foundation of my therapeutic practice in which those pillars support an approach centered on the unique needs and strengths of the individual as well as the power of the therapeutic relationship.

My practice seeks to address both the internal and external factors that impact mental health. I use cognitive and dialectical behavioral therapy to educate clients on how thinking patterns effect how we feel and act, while encouraging self empowerment and personal growth through a humanistic and strengths-based approach. I seek to understand the individual's struggle in context rather than in isolation, with intervention often targeting dynamic influences such as family, social life, and the environment. My goal is to help you achieve your goals through a holistic approach that fits your needs and preferences.

Throughout my professional journey, I've worked with young adult, adolescent, and neurodivergent populations as a school based therapist and behavioral health worker. I am clinically trained to apply trauma-informed care to my practice and aim to create a space where clients feel supported while also being challenged in ways that align with their goals and readiness for change.

MAX’S FAVORITE PART ABOUT BEING A THERAPIST

My favorite part of being a therapist is witnessing growth in real time and the client's reaction to the realization that they are capable of change. I became a therapist because I simply desire to help people improve the quality of their lives. I realized this as my calling after toiling in a career in which well-being was not adequately prioritized. It is my client's growth and the belief they gain in themselves that fills me with a genuine feeling of joy and gratitude that is hard to match.
